Configuration Management Software Critical for Rapid, Network-Wide Disaster Recovery According to the Yankee Group

--Configuration Management and Control Software Can Reduce the Time to Reconfigure Network Equipment Hit By Denial- of- Service Attack By as Much as 90 Percent (Yankee Group Research Note, Jan. 29, 2003)--

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Jan. 30, 2003 - Intelliden Corporation, the leading provider of business-driven device management software, provides patent-pending solutions that enable service providers, enterprises and government organizations to automatically shut down and contain their networks when hit by a virus or a denial-of-service attack. Once contained, the Intelliden software can intelligently restore the mission-critical network to its previous state—with the touch of a button.

According to the Yankee Group Research Note, “The Day the Internet Broke,” the recent “SQL Slammer” attack, which could be the largest attack in the history of the Internet, is a warning of what will continue to happen if CEOs, CTOs and CIOs do not build security into their networks at a time when ever-growing numbers of corporations are looking to IP and the Internet to solve many business problems. As for the market impact, the Yankee Group states that deployments of IP-based solutions will still occur, but many organizations will delay implementations until they are sure that security risks are minimized.

“Configuration management vendors are positioned well in crisis situations such as the one caused by the SQL Slammer,” said Zeus Kerravala, vice president, Application Infrastructure and Software Platforms, Enterprise Computing and Networking, Yankee Group. “Recovering from a network-wide attack may require network managers to reconfigure every network device. This can be time consuming and error prone if done device by device, which is compounded in a multivendor network. Software from vendors such as Intelliden can reduce the amount of time it takes to reconfigure a network from an all-day process to just a few foolproof mouse clicks.”

Intelliden’s patent-pending software suite, the Intelliden R-Series™, ensures the network is driven by business policies. The software enables service providers, enterprises and government organizations to dynamically configure and control routers, LAN/WAN switches, firewalls and optical devices from multiple vendors through one unified control plane.

When experiencing a virus or denial-of-service attack, customers can leverage the automation capabilities of the Intelliden R-Series Command Sets™ functionality, which applies mass configuration changes to multiple devices simultaneously. With this capability, customers can automatically shut down and contain the attack. They can then inoculate the affected servers and PCs as well as use the Intelliden R-Series to easily implement vendors’ suggestions for combating the virus across the network, such as turning off a particular port.

Once the virus is contained, the Intelliden R-Series enables customers to return the network to its previous state automatically through Intelligent Versioning and Backup™ and restoration. As part of this process, the Intelliden R-Series doesn’t just push the previous configuration to the device, which will cause the device to reboot, interfaces to bounce and the network to reconverge. Instead, the Intelliden R-Series analyzes and determines what is necessary to effectively implement the configuration, adds the logic to do so, and only pushes the changes necessary to implement that previous state.

“When the network is attacked, every second counts. Automated device configuration is critical to quickly isolate the virus or denial-of-service, applying the fix and returning the network to its previous state,” said Glen Tindal, Intelliden chief technology officer. “That’s what the Intelliden R-Series does. With our software’s capabilities, Intelliden customers have built-in disaster recovery and security plans.”
